Stadium of Stories: an inter-generational project created by Newham Council’s London Stadium Learning in partnership with Eastside Community Heritage and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with the support of West Ham United Football Club (WHUFC).
This exciting project aimed to capture the fascinating memories and experiences of the people that supported, lived around and were in some way affected by WHUFC during its time at Upton Park.
Research took place in the year of the Club’s move to the London Stadium in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in August 2016. Activities to collect stories involved pupils from local schools, teachers, historians, professional writers, volunteers, libraries, fans, previous WHUFC employees and football players.
From these stories, a touring exhibition and collection of photographs, educational resources and activities have been created, to be used as teaching & learning resources with students in schools, youth clubs and colleges.
You can view examples of this work together with worksheets that can be used to create studies around WHUFC in the Learning Activities area.
The App: from the research materials collected for this project, we have created an App that will guide people around previous WHU grounds and relate information and experiences about West Ham United on the way. We aim to extend this ‘walking tour’ in the near future to include the present home of the Hammers at the London Stadium.
We hope that you find Stadium of Stories as engaging and inspiring to explore as we did to create!
